The magnitude of the mutual attraction in the scalar form; the force on body 2 due to body 1 in the vector form.

Collects the attraction that $m_1$ and $m_2$ exert on each other at separation $r$.

If either mass doubles, $F$ doubles. If $r$ doubles, $F$ falls by a factor of four.
